HALF MOON BAY, Calif. (AP) — Police in California arrested a man for allegedly stealing a small aircraft before crashing onto a beach and leaving the scene on Thursday. Deputies received a report of a small airplane landing “near or on a beach” in Half Moon Bay around 5 p.m., the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office said in a news release. Police said officers found the aircraft, intact but unoccupied, on the sand south of Poplar Beach, which is about 30 miles (48.2 kilometers) south of San Francisco. Deputies located a man matching the description of a person seen landing the plane and walking away, police said. The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the theft with the Palo Alto Police Department.

Jan 23 (Reuters) - Seven people were killed in a mass shooting at two locations in the coastal northern California city of Half Moon Bay on Monday, CBS News reported. The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office reported a shooting incident with multiple victims and that a suspect was in custody. Half Moon Bay is about 30 miles (50 km) south of San Francisco. The shooting took place as the city of Monterey Park in Los Angeles County was still roiling from a mass shooting on Saturday that killed 11 people. Seven people were shot and killed in two separate locations in Half Moon Bay Monday afternoon, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office. Four victims were found dead at about 2:22 p.m. along the 12700 block of Cabrillo Highway, the sheriff's office said. Shortly after that discovery, three more victims were found dead at separate scene in the area, according to the sheriff's office. The suspect, 67-year-old Half Moon Bay resident Zhao Chunli, was taken into custody at about 4:40 p.m. after he was found in his vehicle in the parking lot of the Half Moon Bay substation, the sheriff's office said. The victims are Chinese farmworkers, Half Moon Bay Councilmember Debbie Ruddock said.
